We sat down and chatted to the uber-talented Bettina McIlwraith of Appetite for Decoration recently about Skarfe's collaboration with artist Jess Johnson. Bettina is something of an all-round Sydney creative director, stylist, collaborator and consultant. Her inspiring blog touches on independent retail, art and of course, print. Totems and alters are a big passion, perhaps her raison d'être. This is her second alter dedicated to our artist collaborations, the first being in 2015 using Kushana Bush's work Reading the Bird Entrails. Here's what she had to say:

Print tastic Tuesday is dedicated today, to an awesome shopping spot, a salon of scarves called Skarfe in Sydney’s Kings Cross. This diamond in Sydney’s retail rough is owned and run by native New Zealander, Brad McGlashan, who sources the globe for the most super of scarves to adorn yourself and//or your home with. Also, and my favourites, his collaborations with artists, the current collective effort being withJess Johnson of whitenoisedisco. Print tastic? Most definitely, infact this art-for-your-body will literally blow your beautiful minds. I made an altar in honour of the activity-filled Jess Johnson X Skarfe “Screensaver” scarf. Bend + stretch. We're over the moon to have one of our artist collaboration scarves selected as this week's 'Object of Desire' by the Sydney Morning Herald, and Melbourne's The Age newspaper. Jess Johnson's limited edition Gilgamesh scarf was the pick of the series:

We’re all wrapped up in these oversized silk
scarves courtesy of Sydney outfit Skarfe’s new
collaboration with acclaimed artist Jess Johnson.
Born in New Zealand, Johnson was based in
Melbourne for 10 years before relocating to New
York, and she confesses to a passionate interest
in sci-fi, parallel universes and comic books. In
Gilgamesh (left), a gorgeous medley of colours and
prints inspired by the ancient epic poem, translates
superbly onto an expanse of wearable silk.

Skarfe has just released our third, much anticipated artist collaboration, this time with acclaimed artist Jess Johnson. Johnson knows about the visual clash of human worlds. Born in Tauranga, New Zealand, Johnson was based in Melbourne for ten years and has now permanently relocated to eventful, visually abundant New York. Johnson is known for installation and video work as well as works on paper: densely imagined explorations of dystopic worlds, reflecting her interest in science fiction, parallel universes, outsider art and comic books. And her patterned, speculative graphics with their recurring human figuration – people caught in the contortions of sleeping, yoga or sex – are perfect for translation on to foldable, wearable fabrics.

Three of Johnson’s works, GilgameshFlesh Screensaver, and Wallpaper, have been digitally printed then hand-finished in a limited edition range of oversized silk scarves. Gilgamesh is a gorgeous medley of bright pattern and epic scope inspired by the ancient Babylonian poem. Flesh Screensaver and Wallpaper show ritualised, tessellated human forms on a delicate pale and a rich dark background respectively.

Johnson’s collaboration with Skarfe follows her solo NGV exhibition Wurm Haus and relocation to New York on the coveted Australia Council’s Green Street Studio residency. Skarfe's prior artist collaborations include works made with Lucas Grogan and Kushana Bush. For further information about Jess Johnson, visit her website.
